Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis is probably not a name you know. She was from West Virginia in America. She organized a club of women to nurse wounded soldiers from the north and south during the civil war. After the war she started “Mother Friendship days” to reconcile families that had been divided by the conflict. She had four children and lost another seven children. She taught Sunday school in the local Methodist church for twenty years. She died in 1905 and her daughter Anna honoured her mother by initiating a holiday honouring all mothers. Later a resolution on congress passed in May 1918 established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
